When we were all quite
young, we spent much of our time reading, writing, singing, playing our instruments and acting out many a story!
On one particular day,
we all set off together, following the creek to
the big willow tree to rehearse a play that Thalia and
Melpomene had written.
We spent much time at
the willow tree, it was an especially peaceful spot, and the large
limbs of the old willow kept us
protected from the heat of the afternoon sun.
I must say though, that the very best things about
this spot were the nearby apricot tree that produced
the most delectable fruits (which my sisters
and I ate plenty of!) and the fact that this
spot of the creek had a sandy bed rather than
pebbles and stones (which could be quite
hard on the feet!).
Often times, when we tired
of rehearsing or writing or whatever we were doing on a particular day,
we would tromp through the creek in our bare feet!
On this particular day,
we are all playing our assigned roles as directed by Thalia and Melpomene, when a sudden gust of
wind hit! A gust so forceful that
we were all knocked back a step or two! A gust so forceful that the
old trees branches groaned and creaked! As we all stood silent, waiting for the wind to
pass, one of the trees largest branches began to crack! As we were
trying to flee from under the tree, with
the loudest CRACK……… the branch snapped!
It plummeted to the ground and knocked poor Polyhymnia
right into the creek! She was trapped beneath
the branch! Try as we might, even the eight of us together could
not budge the branch!
As we frantically attempted
to come up with a plan to rescue dear Polyhymnia the most amazing thing happened! Nine birds of different colors
appeared, as if from nowhere,
each one dropping a different colored crystal at our feet, and ONE, a lovely
golden bird, dropped a crystal right
in Polyhymnia’s hand!
As each of us picked up
one of the crystals, the branch which had Polyhymnia trapped, began to rise!
Higher and higher as each
crystal was retrieved……
and just as the final
crystal was picked up, the branch lifted just enough to free Polyhymnia!
We all knew there was no
earthly reason for this phenomenon, but that these crystals brought to
us had magical qualities
and we made a pact at that time to never part with them. It wasn’t
until later in our lives that we truly recognized the magic of our crystals,
but alas…… that is a story for another day.
