What's in Thalia's Basket?

March 18, 2008

With Easter and the Spring season near at hand, Muse Thalia lovingly prepared a special Parlour Night for the guests.

She started the evening by telling a tale about how the Easter Bunny came to be:

Long, long ago, Eostre, the goddess of spring, was late arriving one year, and winter still had a firm grip on the land.

One day, a small child from a village was walking in the woods, came across a swan who was covered in ice and snow and nearly frozen to death.

The swan was exceedingly beautiful, and it made the little girl very sad that it was going to die, so she called out for Eostre to save the bird.

Happily, the goddess heard her plea, and came to save the swan.

However, when she arrived, she saw that it was too late to save the swan intact, as its wings had frozen and fallen off.

Taking pity on the creature, the goddess changed it into a rabbit.

But, since it was a rabbit only on the outside, and was still a bird on the inside, it was still able to lay eggs.

In this legend we find the possible origins of both Easter Eggs and the Easter Bunny himself.

Then, out of Muse Thalia's pocket came a beautiful Easter Basket filled with Spring and Easter things. Whatever was inside it?

Muse Thalia, adding an element of surprise, said that she would take out one item at a time, depending on the roll of her Lucky Numbers die, which each Parlour player would have a turn to roll.

Lil DD was the first one to roll, and she produced a 4. Muse Thalia took out a lovely flower called Bit of Sunshine, and she decided to see how many words the players could make from SUNSHINE. The players, clever as always made many words such as shines, sun, sins, in, shin, shins, nine and sine, just to name a few.

Next up, Criss rolled a 1, and Muse Thalia took out a lovely big ham from the basket. Muse Thalia thought HAM would be a good word for Acrospewsia and the following phrases were created:

Happy are Muses!
Have a Muffin
Ham and Mustard
Hopping around Merrily
Harmony and Music
Hug a Mother

Ws Babe rolled and Muse Thalia took a Daisy from the basket. With the Daisy, Muse Thalia had Dusty Rose of Narnia make up 5 words that rhymed with Daisy - hazy, lazy, crazy, phazy and fantasy.

Then, the next item out of Muse Thalia's basket was a very pretty Easter Egg. Muse Thalia decided EASTER was a good word for a traditonal Acromusia round:

Everyone Ate Strange Treats Except Rabbis!

Dusty Rose rolled a 4, and out of Muse Thalia's basket came a large pink flowered bush (which Muse Erato insisted had been "borrowed" from her bedroom!) Using the word BLOSSOMS, the players created another Acromusia:

Big Leprechauns Over Stepped Someone's Only Mission Secret

Lady Songbird was the next one to roll, and out of Muse Thalia's basket came another Easter Egg!

Muse Thalia decided to do a Five and Rhyme game on this, giving Lady Songbird a choice of using the words Happy or Easter. She decided on Happy, and cleverly came up with sappy, lappy, tacky, jackie and dappy.

Midnight Cricket was the last guest to have a roll of the die, and out of Muse Thalia's basket came a chocolate Easter Bunny! This too was a good item for Five and Rhyme on the word Bunny. Midnight Cricket was quick and clever to answer with sunny, funny, runny, tummy, gummy.

Alas, the hour had come to an end all too quickly! The Muses handed out their Sister Terpsichore's bright red pillow as a gift for coming to the Parlour.

Please be sure to join the Muses for Parlour Games on Tuesdays at 4pm WA in the Morpheus Road Garden East for many fun games, stories, surprises and giggles!
