Winter Weather

January 22, 2008

Our topic today was wintery weather...bbuuurrrrr. There was a combination of recycled poetry (that we heard/created) last year, and some lovely new contributions. Many shivery aspects of winter weather were explored.

Dusty Rose shared the completed version of the poem she begain last week...

Winter Thoughts
by Dusty

Bundle up tight for a romping snowball fight
Hats, scarfs, mittens, gloves all trusted up like turtledoves
Winter wonderland to see
Making snowmen for your and me.

Santa's sleigh has come and gone
Lights no longer twinkle on the lawn
Passing cold and cloudy days
Snuggled beside a fire's blaze

With quiet dreams of summertime
And penning thoughts into rhyme.
Thank you Lord for snowflakes
Falling so light
And sunshine sparkles on the frosted window bright.

Winter Wind
by Muse Urania

The winter wind blows and howls,
sending cold up your sleves...
all the way to your elbows.
It frosts your eye lashes...
and chaffs your skin...
as you snuggle more deeply in.
It chills your bones
and nips your ears and nose.
Although winter is beautiful,
we are glad when it goes.

Lil DD recited a Haiku she had prepared for Poetry Corner last year.

Winter Day
by Dusty

Low clouds block the sun
Barren trees icy fingers
White world sleeps below.

Bare fields furrows deep
Silently wait for springtime
Blizzard howls wild n' cold.

Winter Storm
by Trelaina

Time stands still in a snow storm,
quiet and hush are the streets.
Only the mush of the snow
beneath my feet.
Wind has it's will,
and I'm never warm...
whistling so shrill,
whipping at my arms.
Snow stings my eyes
whirling through the skies
sure to disguise
anything you recognize.

Group Poem

In the winter you see many clouds in the sky,
and many people are wondering why.
Winter comes with trees bending down their icey fingers touching the ground...
Snowflakes drift slowly round and round.

While I, from my warm place besides the fire...comtemplate the freezing rain...
listen to the soft taps as it hits the windowpane...
slowly turning to hail hitting the sidewalk.
Why does the wind blow so cold, well to let nature rest before the spring I'm told.

I, for one, am ready for a change to warm topics, and everyone agreed. Although winter can be quite lovely, and fun for a time...we are ready to move to warmer thoughts. Next week our topic shall be "warm winter kitchens, or winter comfort food." We all agreed it is quite lovely to walk into a warm kitchen full of the smell of fresh bread, roasting hams and chickens, simmering soups or lovely cookies fresh from the oven. Many of our memories are connected to smells and tastes, so I am expecting some very creative works this coming week. Please do join us this coming Tuesday for Poetry Corner, 11:00am wat at Theatre View.
