What's in a Bird?

Muse Terpsichore was very excited about Spring's arrival and all the lovely birds she could hear and see throughout the day. She quickly decided that the day's game should reflect all the wonderful birds.

As each new player arrived she would tell them the name of the game, What's in a Bird? This caused many of the players to answer with things like "guts, worms, bones, etc.". This caused some distress to Terpsichore and Euterpe because they had not considered that their guests would take it so literally. The truth was that Terpsichore intended them to find words inside the bird's names.

Following the normal Potpourri procedure, Terpsichore brought out her die and had each player roll to find out how many words they would have to make. Sadee was hoping it was a special die that had a zero on one side but this was not to be.

Stella found Bin, Rob Ron and Born inside Robin. Next DD relaxed with finding just July and Lay inside Blue Jay. Sadee did not find the zero but found Card, Dial and Lard inside Cardinal. Lady Songbird SK Elf delighted in finding Row, Rap, Sap and Sow inside Sparrow. DUSTY was next and found Hick, Cheek, Deck and Hack inside Chickadee. Dest!ny found Grace, Leak and Lack inside Grackle. Britney had to look inside Crow and fortunately rolled a 2 so she found Row and Cow. There didn't seem to be many more words to find in Crow anyway.

Everything seemed to be going along almost too easily. With each player being very quick to find the amount of words needed. After a brief consultation Terpsichore and Euterpe decided to bring out the second die. Each player now had to roll two dice and add the numbers together to find out how many words they would need to find inside each bird. Sadee was fervently hoping the second die had nothing but zeros on it.

Stella began by rolling 7 and found Star, Tar, Sing, Gin, Rat, Rail and Knit inside Starling. DD followed with another 7 and found Keep, Rook, Deck, Wreck, Deep, Poor and Door inside Woodpecker. Sadee was next and tried to convice the Muses she had rolled two ones. Unfortunately she had actually rolled 10. She proved that she could meet the challenge with Dock, Cove, Crock, Drove, Code, Red, Rove, Cook, Doe and Core lurking inside Rock Dove. Lady Songbird SK Elf had it much easier when she only needed to find 3 words inside Hummingbird. She found Ring, Hum and Bring. DUSTY rolled 6 and found Chin, Shin, Chime, Shine, White and Swine inside Chimney Swift. Dest!ney worried about the 7 she rolled but quickly found All, Barn, Low, Lawn, Warn and Ball inside Barn Swallow. Britney also rolled 7 and easily found Let, Art, Pie, Map, Pail, Ran and Pale inside Purple Martin.
